Sri Chamudeswari Temple (13th Century)
Located on Chamundi Hill. The Sri Chamundeswari Temple on the summit is dedicated to the royal Wodeyar family's titular deity, the goddess Chamundi, an avatar of Parvati (Shiva's consort). The base of the temple dates from the 12th century; the ornately sculptured pyramidal gopuram (towering entrance) was built in the 1800s. (all info. taken from Fodor's book on India) *The temple's inner entrances are staffed by aggressive priests hassling tourists into buying flower offerings and bindis (decorative dots traditionally worn between the eyes, for women) Mike and I can attest to the aggressive priests!
